If You Want to be Heard – Learn to Listen

Here are two skills that you must master in order to achieve success at work and in life:

listen carefully.  This is the most important skill you can develop.  It is where communication starts.

playback.  Paraphrase back what you’ve heard.  You can say something like, “I heard you say (fill in here).  Did I get that right?”  This does two important things: 1) it shows that you’ve been listening carefully (everyone likes to be heard), and 2) it allows for clarification, which prevents unmet expectations and wasted energy.

In interviews I conducted for my upcoming book, business leaders ranked lack of listening skills as the top weakness of many employees.  So learn to listen and set yourself apart instantly.
